College of Nursing Dean’s Society

While we are extremely proud of the successes our students, faculty, and alumni have achieved, the College of Nursing continues to diligently seek ways to meet the opportunities and challenges the College faces presently and will confront in the future among its missions of teaching, service, and research. To help address these issues, the College has formed the Dean’s Circle.

The Dean’s Circle is an Important & Meaningful Way to Support the College of Nursing

Dean’s Circle funding provides a supplement to the operating budget of the College of Nursing. The money is used at the Dean’s direction and where she feels the need is the greatest. It is the only discretionary operating budget that our Dean has to utilize.

Last year, the Dean’s Circle helped fund two students’ attendance at the Southern Nursing Research Society Conference. The two senior students, both now with nursing jobs in hand, said this was a highlight educational event of their year. Dean’s Circle funds have also been used to provide much- needed scanners to help train our nursing students on the EPIC patient information records system.

Dean’s Circle also helped fund travel for a Ph.D. student to provide a lecture at an international conference. Without the Dean’s Circle, these activities would have been impossible.

It has also been used in the past to help underwrite costs of our annual magazine that is mailed to donors, potential donors and friends. This magazine is our only printed “brag piece” and is most useful in recruiting new donors, faculty and students. We are careful to keep the costs and production of this to a minimum, while not sacrificing the professional branding that is so important to our college.

Dean’s Circle funding has also been used in the past to purchase computers for faculty.

In the past, Dean’s Circle funds have been scarce (less than $25,000) so as we grow this account, we will be able to use it even more for faculty and student development. This can mean more travel
money, more computers, funding for dues to professional associations, additional equipment for the simulation lab or Progressive Learning Center and professional seminars.

With budgets being tight throughout UAMS and with the College of Nursing managing its operations in a lean and conservative manner, the Dean’s Circle has never been more important to the college than now. All members of the UAMS College of Nursing Advisory Board are members of the Dean’s Circle, as are all members of the Dean’s Executive Council, key alumni and several College of Nursing staff. It is their way of helping the college on an annual basis and of showing their respect and appreciation to our college.
